Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service selects Cadcorp SIS to replace its existing mapping system

Cadcorp software will provide access to existing data and help improve the quality of information provided to fire station crews

Digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) software developer Cadcorp has announced that Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service has selected Cadcorp SIS Map Modeller and Cadcorp SIS Map Reader software to replace the service’s existing mapping system and to improve the quality of information provided to front-line staff.

“After a full evaluation process, Cadcorp SIS was selected as the basis of our new GIS because it will protect our previous investments in data through its ability to directly read from and/or write to over 160 popular GIS, CAD, graphic and database file formats, on-the-fly, without the need for additional-cost translation software or middleware”, explained Phil Barry, performance manager, Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service. “This will allow us to integrate our existing systems and data into the new GIS. In addition, Cadcorp SIS will provide enhanced spatial analysis capabilities which will help us improve the quality of the information provided to fire station crews”.

Spatial information will be modelled with Cadcorp SIS and will then be made available for access by operational staff in order to give them a real-time view of incidents as they occur, along with other necessary information.

Connecting to other systems
Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service has plans to connect its new Cadcorp SIS-based GIS to the Community Fire Risk Management Information System (CFRMIS) in order to display details of community safety activities, such as home fire safety checks. It will also connect to an Oracle-based database in order to display incident data such as fires, false alarms, road traffic collisions and other incidents, all in the context of a map of the area concerned.

In addition, plans are in place for information such as risk areas from the Fire Service Emergency Cover (FSEC) Toolkit provided by central government, as well as selected demographic information from Experian’s Mosaic system, to be displayed through the new GIS for easier interpretation.

Among the benefits that Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service expects to get from its new Cadcorp SIS-based GIS is the ability to better target its resources in order to improve community safety, both in a proactive way through community safety initiatives and reactively in response to incidents.
