Press ReleaseCadcorp becomes a GDAL/OGR Silver Sponsor. Sponsorship will support the work of the OSGeo’s GDAL/OGR project. Digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) software developer Cadcorp has become a Silver Sponsor of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation’s (OSGeo) Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL/OGR) project. OSGeo is a worldwide, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting and providing a reliable home for open source GIS-related software. The GDAL/OGR project is a cross-platform translator library for raster and vector geospatial data formats. Cadcorp’s sponsorship will go towards hiring a developer to focus on tasks within the project such as improving quality, adding new features, providing user support, and improving documentation. “Cadcorp is a long-time supporter of ‘open’ standards in digital mapping and GIS, and we use GDAL for additional raster format support – often standards-based, such as National Imagery Transmission Format (NITF) and USGS SDTS DEM – over and above what we already provide in this area,” said Martin Daly, technical director, Cadcorp. “Becoming a GDAL/OGR Silver Sponsor will help us to continue to deliver industry-leading data format support to our customers in an efficient manner. Also, helping to ensure that the GDAL/OGR project is able to continue its excellent work will support our current and future development activities in the areas of raster data access and interoperability,” he added. “We warmly welcome Cadcorp into the community of GDAL/OGR project sponsors,” said Tyler Mitchell, executive director, Open Source Geospatial Foundation. “Building on its support for GIS data interoperability, the company is making a valuable contribution to our efforts that will benefit the GIS user community worldwide.” About the Open Source Geospatial Foundation and GDAL/OGR The Open Source Geospatial Foundation, or OSGeo, is a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to support and to promote the collaborative development of open geospatial technologies and data. The Foundation provides financial, organisational and legal support to the broader open source geospatial community. It also serves as an independent legal entity to which community members can contribute code, funding and other resources, secure in the knowledge that their contributions will be maintained for public benefit. The Foundation’s projects are all freely available and usable under an OSI-certified open source licence. The Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL/OGR) is a cross-platform, C++ translator library for raster and vector geospatial data formats. As a library, it presents a single abstract data model to the calling applications for all supported data formats. GDAL supports over 50 raster data formats, while OGR supports over 20 vector data formats.
