Press ReleaseBerwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council selects Cadcorp GeognoSIS.NET for its Web-based GIS. Cadcorp software will integrate with existing desktop GIS to enable delivery of on-line services to citizens. Leading digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) software developer Cadcorp has announced that Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council, in the North East of England, has selected Cadcorp GeognoSIS.NETTM to underpin the delivery of on-line services to its citizens. The Cadcorp software will be integrated with the council’s existing desktop GIS to provide Web-based access to maps and associated information. Describing the business drivers behind the decision, Nick Latham, ICT manager, Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council said, “While we already have a GIS capability within the council, we wanted to make the maps and associated information held in that system readily available to citizens via our Web site. By doing this we will encourage the take-up of on-line services by citizens and improve the quality of services we provide. We selected Cadcorp GeognoSIS.NET because it provides a cost-effective, easy-to-use and dynamic Web-based GIS solution. In addition, its ability to read and display a very wide range of native GIS, CAD, database and graphic formats without translation and to integrate with our existing GIS, makes its implementation relatively straightforward”. While the principal reason for implementing Cadcorp GeognoSIS.NET is to make interactive maps available to citizens via the council’s Web site, council staff will also have access to the GIS database via the council’s intranet. The council plans to phase the availability of information relating to specific departments and services as the new Web-based capability is developed. Among the benefits Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council expects to get from its new Web-enabled GIS is an increase in the use of the council’s Web site by citizens accessing information on services and facilities provided by the authority. It also expects to improve service levels by enabling citizens to make comments and to submit reports using the interactive maps on the Web site. In addition, the council is confident that, by making maps and associated data available to staff on-line, GIS will improve the presentation of complex information and support decision making across the strategic planning process. “We are delighted that Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council has selected Cadcorp GeognoSIS.NET to enable its new Web-based GIS capability,” said Mike O’Neil, managing director, Cadcorp. “We look forward to working with the council to help them fulfil their plans.” About Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council Sparsely populated at 27 people/square kilometre (c/f 380/sq.km on average for England as a whole), the area served by Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council has a population of a little over 26,000, a quarter of whom are of retirement age.
