Press Release

Cadcorp announces PostGIS support in Cadcorp SIS V6.1

The first GIS vendor to offer this option for spatial-enabled data storage Cadcorp, developer of the pioneering Cadcorp SIS - Spatial Information System GIS software, is pleased to announce that PostGIS support is now available in Cadcorp SIS V6.1. This is the
first implementation of PostGIS by a GIS vendor.

PostGIS was developed by Canadian firm Refractions Research Inc., as a research project in open source spatial database technology. PostGIS is Open Source software and adds support for geographic objects to the PostgreSQL object-relational database. In effect, PostGIS "spatially enables" the PostgreSQL server, allowing it to be used as a backend spatial database for
geographic information systems (GIS), much like Oracle's Spatial extension. PostGIS follows the OGC Simple Features for SQL specification.

"Cadcorp has brought the first interactive editing and analysis environment to PostGIS. This will fundamentally change the way PostGIS users interact with their data," said Paul Ramsey, President of Refractions Research. "Cadcorp SIS is a great product, and provides a seamless interactive interface to data in PostGIS. This is a big step forward,” he added.

"Spatially-enabled databases are becoming increasingly widespread and are no longer the preserve of large, enterprise, geo-spatial data stores. This change has been particularly marked in the UK with the advent of OS MasterMap™ and the increased storage and management requirements that this has brought. Our policy at Cadcorp has always been to offer our users the widest possible choice of data storage options, while remaining database vendor neutral, and to this end we have added support for PostGIS alongside existing spatial database options like Oracle Spatial. We are pleased to be the first GIS vendor to add direct support for PostGIS across our product range." Stated Martin Daly , Technical Director, Cadcorp.

Billed as “The Mystery Database”, PostGIS support was given a sneak preview at the Cadcorp UK User Group meeting in London , November 2003. It was then publicly aired by name at an Ordnance Survey GB technical briefing, conducted by Cadcorp on 26th April 2004 in Southampton, England.

Cadcorp SIS - Spatial Information System - is a suite of Windows-based and Web-enabled end user and developer digital mapping and geographic information system (GIS) software products. The desktop suite comprises: Map Viewer, which provides support for over 100 graphic and data formats, thematic and hard copy; Map Manager, which provides the mainstream user the ability to view, explore, query, symbolise and print digital map and associated tabular data; Ma p Editor, which in addition to the facilities provided by Map Manager, provides the GIS data custodian with tools to view, manage and edit map and tabular data; and Map Modeller, which adds 3D modelling, terrain analysis and several thematic and analytic mapping tools.

ActiveX based developer toolkits and Viewer, Manager and Modeller based runtime licences are popular products for the development and implementation of bespoke applications by third parties that take advantage of Cadcorp's GIS expertise.

Cadcorp ASC (Active Server Component) extends the functionality of Cadcorp SIS for use over the Internet or a company-wide intranet. It is designed for the .asp environment running on MS IIS servers. Cadcorp ASC is a dynamic, server-side Web-based GIS, not merely a mappublishing tool for pre-authored images. Cadcorp ASC provides a true, interactive Web-based solution for real time map creation and analysis.

Cadcorp GeognoSIS.NET extends the dynamic functionality of Cadcorp SIS for use over the Internet or a company-wide intranet utilising the .NET development environment. It can be deployed in a multiple server, multiple server architecture and operating system setting. Cadcorp SIS OS MasterMap Loader is supplied with Cadcorp SIS Map Modeller for the loading and management of Ordnance Survey MasterMap data in relational databases. Cadcorp SIS PAI Manager is supplied with Cadcorp SIS Map Modeller for the management of Positional Accuracy Improvement (PAI) shifts using vendor supplied and user defined link files.

Cadcorp apSIS is programmable component software for the development of geospatial applications for the desktop and Pocket PC platforms.

Cadcorp mSIS is a data collection package that incorporates a desktop data capture management applicatio n and a Pocket PC based data collection tool.
