Press ReleaseCadcorp underlines importance of the work of the OpenGIS Consortium in keynote speech at the 2003 AGI Conference At the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) Conference held in London last month, the message of GIS software interoperability was a central and recurring theme. This fact was ably demonstrated in a keynote presentation by Martin Daly, technical director, Cadcorp, who gave an overview of the rise of the OpenGIS Consortium (OGC) and the importance of OGC initiatives within the geospatial community. The Plenary session, GI Technology - Enabling Business Improvement, which Daly addressed, also featured key industry personnel from ESRI, Intergraph, Microsoft and Oracle - but it was the practical yet visionary approach taken by Cadcorp in pioneering open standards and delivering this story simply, concisely and at first hand that captured the audiences' imagination. "The AGI Conference is a recognised and established forum for the UK geo-spatial community and it was good to see so many people in concordance with OGC's interoperability initiatives, particularly those aimed at making GI software and services run seamlessly within and across businesses," said Daly. Mark Lineham, director, AGI, added, “The AGI’s mission is to maximise the use of geographic information for the benefit of the citizen, of good governance and of commerce. Our annual conference is one of the most important activities in our calendar and is a key forum for the exchange of information amongst GI professionals and also for taking the message to a wider audience. The AGI has always placed a great deal of importance on the role that standards and interoperability play in achieving its mission.” Having received more "OpenGIS certified conformant" certificates than any other GIS company, Cadcorp lays claim to being a market leader in interoperable GIS. "Some vendors lead OpenGIS, others follow. Some participate actively whilst others are spectators. OpenGIS has its runners and its walkers, theoreticians and practitioners. One thing for sure is that GI interoperability is becoming an ever more important issue and will not stand still; the benefits of economy and efficiency, data security, currency and neutrality are simply too large to be ignored" Daly stated. The Cadcorp SIS product line is testament to our own commitment to GI interoperability" he added. Cadcorp's Simon Doyle, a product engineer, further underlined the company's commitment to OpenGIS within the conference session entitled 'Enabling GI to Talk', dispelling some of the misconceptions surrounding OGC and underlining the business benefits for open interfaces for GIS. Using props from Monty Python, the quality of his presentation, "What has OpenGIS ever done for us", was officially recognised by the conference organisers, who awarded it the runner-up prize for best paper in conference.
