SWEGIS rolls out GeoWebShare PreViewer based on Cadcorp Web GIS technology

Cadcorp partner SWEGIS have developed a new preview module for their GIS data distribution system GeoWebShare. This new module is based on Cadcorp SIS Active Server Component (ASC), the powerful and dynamic server based Web GIS. Together GeoWebShare and Cadcorp SIS ASC allow users to preview geospatial datasets online prior to download and upload.

Conceived as a centralised distribution platform. The idea behind GeoWebShare is that an organisation’s holding of geospatial data can be assembled and catalogued on a central server and then accessed using a regular Web browser by anyone in the organisation.

Using Cadcorp SIS ASC as the preview module has meant that over 45 GIS, CAD and image file types can be accessed on-the-fly without recourse to translation. A vital edge, when serving disparate data. These formats include ARC/INFO Export, NTF, SHP, DXF, DWG, DGN, MIF/MID, TAB, EURONAV, SDTS, ECW, MrSID, GeoTIFF and many others.

The GeoWebShare PreViewer includes several easy to use GIS functions aimed to suit novice and expert alike. These include pan, zoom, change colours, layers, info-click, layer control and print. This gives the user not only the capability to preview map data, but also offers them a no-nonsense distributed GIS. Users can add any number of layers, click on map items for information, create basic maps and print them out. Furthermore, Cadcorp SIS ASC has all the capabilities of Cadcorp SIS – Spatial Information System. This means that the PreViewer can be extended, if necessary, to include a wide range of analysis and editing capabilities, but without the need for additional browser plug-in software.

SWEGIS see many advantages with GeoWebShare:

  • Centralised geospatial data storage makes data access by the whole organisation easy.
  • All data stored is given metadata and a geographic extent. This structures and orders the disparate geospatial information that most organisations hold.
  • Since GeoWebShare organises all geospatial data, the administration of this information is greatly simplified. The Web browser becomes the access and distribution portal and thus uncontrolled distribution of data via email and CD becomes redundant.
  • Because only a standard browser needed and no specialised plug-in software, anyone and everyone within the organisation can access geospatial data.
  • GeoWebshare is quick to implement and immediately enables operational savings as geospatial information access is made quick, low-cost and easy.
  • By storing all GIS data, CAD drawings, air photos, plans, documents centrally, all users can share and exploit information, even if they never perceived themselves as GIS users.

Mikael Elmquist of SWEGIS summarises why Cadcorp SIS ASC was an ideal choice of software for GeoWebShare: “Selecting Cadcorp SIS ASC was straightforward. The ability to serve lots of data types without changing its original format makes complete sense when providing a centralised geospatial data distribution service. Centralising your geospatial data introduces efficiencies and not having to alter the many formats that your data is likely to be in is a big time and cost saver. Cadcorp SIS ASC could offer the data access capability we needed straight out of the box, plus all the GIS functions necessary for the solution to work and it could be programmed using standard tools that we already understood”.

About Cadcorp

Established in 1991, Cadcorp is a leading developer of digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) software. With offices in the USA and UK, Cadcorp’s distribution and VAR network stretches world-wide. The company also plays a pivotal technical role in the OpenGIS Consortium. Cadcorp SIS is the only complete product family to currently attain OpenGIS conformance certification.

Cadcorp SIS (Spatial Information System) is a range of software modules covering spatial data viewing, data management, data editing, data modelling and analysis. Cadcorp SIS ActiveX components are available for embedding into third party systems. Cadcorp ASC is an Internet/intranet developer toolkit designed for Web based GIS solutions.

Cadcorp SIS applications exist in municipal government, central government, emergency services, insurance, Oil & Natural Gas, mapping and surveying, commerce, broadcasting and many other markets.
