Press ReleaseEast Sussex Fire Brigade opt for Cadcorp SIS Cadcorp, the developer of the popular Cadcorp SIS - Spatial Information System range of Windows based GIS software is very pleased to announce that East Sussex Fire Brigade have purchased Cadcorp SIS.
In recent years East Sussex Fire Brigade has made great advances in the development of using GIS which has been recognised by other brigades, local authorities and by Her Majesty's Inspectorate (HMI), who in his 2001 report stated “... the Brigade’s excellent use of graphical information systems.” Recently a requirement for additional GIS software for the Fire Investigation Unit (FIU) was established. Factors that influenced this decision included a need to work with OS MasterMap, (the new GML2 based seamless, topological dataset from Ordnance Survey). Additionally there were requirements to access a broader canvas of GIS functionality; to develop bespoke functionality easily with standard tools such as Visual Basic; to attain eGovernment objectives for data sharing with their partner, Brighton & Hove Council; to be able to continue operational links with their incumbent GIS system; and to cut procurement and maintenance costs. Martin Jones, GIS Coordinator, East Sussex Fire Brigade, spent time evaluating various GIS software offerings in the market place and concluded that Cadcorp SIS Map Modeller was the 'best fit' for his brigade's requirements. It was found that Map Modeller was easy to use, packed with functionality, able to import many types of data-sets including OS MasterMap, and suitable to edit 1/1250 scale OS Land Line maps for use within their existing GIS system. The capability to work with many different data formats was seen to be a factor in increasing productivity. A major consideration were Ordnance Survey's stated plans to close support links for OS Land Line and replace this digital map scale with OS MasterMap. Cadcorp, through their pioneering OpenGIS work, were recognised by the Brigade as an early adopter of OS MasterMap and seen to be setting up multiple solutions to what promises to be a resource hungry map scale. The repercussions for the brigade were numerous, not least of which is the loss of an accurate Fire Cover Review, (as this is only operable on 1/1250 scale maps) and a MasterMap solution had to be developed. Martin Jones stated that, "Not only from a lower cost and firm support base, we have been impressed with Cadcorp. The company are an established organisation with many thousands of customers in the workplace". Looking to the future he added: "Cadcorp's web-based solution, Cadcorp SIS ASC, certainly fits in to the brigade’s aim of making its use available via the Intranet to all users for maps and incident analysis". Gary Randle, Emergency Services Sales Manager, Cadcorp stated: "We are extremely pleased to welcome our first UK Fire Service into the ever growing family of Cadcorp SIS users. The Fire Brigades are a new market for us, but on the strength of our experience so far in serving East Sussex, one that should develop well for us". ActiveX based developer toolkits and Viewer, Manager and Modeller based runtime licences are popular products for the development and implementation of bespoke applications by third parties that take advantage of Cadcorp’s GIS know-how. Cadcorp ASC (Active Server Component) extends the functionality of Cadcorp SIS for use over the Internet or a company-wide intranet. It is a dynamic, server-side Web-based GIS, not merely a map-publishing tool for pre-authored images.
