Cadcorp SIS UK users meet at Knebworth Park

Knebworth Park in Hertfordshire was the venue for the recent Cadcorp SIS UK User Group meeting. Users from local and central government, academia, data capture agencies and commercial organisations were in attendance to hear the keynote address by Professor Paul Longley and presentations on the OpenGIS Consortium, the National Land and Property Gazetteer, Ordnance Survey’s new Digital National Framework and of course, the latest release of Cadcorp SIS – Spatial Information System.

The keynote address by Professor Longley, of University College London, centred on the main messages contained in a new book entitled 'Geographic Information Systems and Science' which he has co-authored with Micheal Goodchild, David Maguire and David Rhind. A unique, all-encompassing text, this is the first book to cover GI systems, GI science, GI practice, GI management, the impact of Internet-based GIS and GI implementation. It will be published by Wiley in April in full colour in both hard and soft back formats.

Following Paul Longley’s address, an introduction to OpenGIS not only explained the structure, the objectives, the mechanism and achievements of the Open GIS Consortium (OGC) - the international initiative for delivering open interfaces for GIS - but also pointed out the active role that Cadcorp is playing in the work of the OGC.

Tony Black of Intelligent Addressing then explained BS7666 and the National Land and Property Gazetteer. This was a popular topic amongst the many local and central government users of Cadcorp SIS in the audience.

Phil Davies, senior consultant at Ordnance Survey, then gave an overview of the DNF product and its supply in GML v2. (GML v2 is the neutral standard for geospatial data transfer internationally endorsed by the OpenGIS Consortium). The Ordnance Survey presentation was followed by Martin Daly, technical director, Cadcorp, who demonstrated live the GML v2 plug-in dataset for Cadcorp SIS. This was the first ever public demonstration of Ordnance Survey DNF data being read, displayed and manipulated by off-the-shelf GIS software.

The day was rounded off by an overview of the latest point release of Cadcorp SIS v5.2, along with presentations on Web-based GIS implementation 'the Cadcorp way' and a series of 'top tips' for operators on using Cadcorp SIS.
